WHAT IS THE 2020 CENSUS AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Mayor Horrigan is doing everything possible to ensure an accurate 2020 Census count. This is our opportunity to accurately count our citizens, and to give us a fair and equal opportunity to best serve the residents that live here. The Census count determines funding for things like our legislative districts, food assistance, healthcare facilities, childcare, housing assistance and support, public schools, public transportation and the list goes on. An accurate Census count is imperative if we want to take care of our residents. The city of Akron and Summit County have partnered to create the Complete Count Committee, an effort designed to ensure everyone in Summit County is counted in the 2020 Census.

“We want to count everybody. When you have a growing immigrant community there’s a lot of institutional fear of government and we want to make sure our residents don’t feel that.” - Mayor Horrigan

Beginning in March, each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail. Information collected through the census is used to guide distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funding each year, and is used to draw legislative districts. The results of the 2020 Census will have an immense influence on our community. We are counting on you!
