MAYOR DAN HORRIGAN INTRODUCES A ONE-YEAR FREEZE ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA CULTIVATION, PROCESSING OR SALE

Akron, Ohio, Sept. 12, 2016 — Mayor Dan Horrigan introduced legislation imposing a one-year freeze on the issuance or processing of any license, building permit, certificate of occupancy, conditional use or other authorization enabling the cultivation, processing, or dispensing of medical marijuana within the City of Akron. Members of City Council unanimously approved the Mayor's recommendation during this evening's meeting. "The Ohio Legislature legalized medical marijuana this summer, but has yet to issue rules and regulations regarding licensing and physician recommendations," said Mayor Horrigan. "I introduced a one-year moratorium on the cultivation, processing or sale of medical marijuana in Akron in order to thoughtfully and diligently study the effect of the new law on our neighborhoods and determine the best path forward. This moratorium does not affect the ability of patients to legally use medical marijuana in Akron with a physician recommendation." The City of Akron is exercising its authority under Ohio Revised Code Section 3796.29. In addition, the Mayor and his administration are showing their dedication and responsiveness to the citizens of Akron by taking additional time to undertake a review of the applicable law and formulate a local response to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Law, with respect to zoning, licensing and other local regulation of medical marijuana.
