Mayor Horrigan Features Gallery Of Local Black History In City Hall To Celebrate Black History Month

Akron Ohio, February 1, 2017— As we enter Black History Month, Mayor Daniel Horrigan cordially invites residents and visitors to stop by City Hall and take a tour of the City's largest Gallery of Black History displayed throughout the building. "Beginning today, and continuing through the end of February, residents can visit City Hall and learn about the rich history of Akron's African American pioneers, their contributions to various institutions, and their service to the greater Akron community," Mayor Horrigan said. "As I, and other City employees, walk by these posters every day, we are reminded of the important contributions these citizens made to government, science, education, sports, and the arts." The Gallery features more than 35 posters displaying Akron Black History profiles. On various floors of City Hall, visitors will see four Akron Black History banners honoring those who serve or served as Mayoral Appointees, members of Akron City Council, members of the Board of Education of Akron Public Schools, and elected officials serving Akron and Summit County. Visitors can also view more than 70 posters and banners highlighting national figures, events and accomplishments, in the following topics:

Additionally, Mayor Horrigan will be highlighting one person from local African American history on social media every day this month.
