HEAP winter crisis program to begin November 1

Community Action Akron Summit (CA) wants to remind you that heating assistance is available to eligible households through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). The program runs from

Nov. 1, 2019 until March 31, 2020. CA serves income-eligible households in Summit who are at or below 175% of the federal poverty guideline and a household can apply for E-HEAP only once between November 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020.

CA and the Ohio Development Services Agency are providing a one-time payment of $175 toward a utility bill if service is in threat of disconnection, is terminated, is new service, or if the service is being transferred. Clients who use bulk fuel may be eligible to up to $900 to fill the tank if there is less than a 25% supply of bulk fuel.

Customers must bring the following information with them when applying:

Social Security cards and birthdates, proof of citizenship, i.e. Birth Certificate or Hospital Birth Records, Voter Registration Card, OWF Program, US Passport), for all persons in the household.

• Landlord’s name, address and phone number if renting

• Most recent utility bills showing proof of an emergency situation with disconnection notices, turn-on orders, or in the case of bulk fuel, a less than a 25% supply

E-HEAP applicants must bring documentation to verify their total household income for the immediate past thirty days. Households claiming “no income” must obtain “IRS Tax Transcript” or “Verification of Non-filing Letter” from the IRS prior to appointment. Documents can be obtained by phone, in writing or on line at www.irs.gov. If supported by a gift giver, a signed letter with address and phone number from the supporter of their assistance to the household will be needed. Documentation of all household support is required and must be brought to the interview. If all appointments are filled, callers may opt to call back between 4pm and 6pm that day to schedule one of a limited number of walk-in time slots the next business day.

Extended walk-in service will be offered from November 1 through November 8, 2019 between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:30 pm at the 670 W. EXCHANGE STREET OFFICE ONLY.

Walk-in scheduling is determined on a first-come, first-served basis to customers whose utility services are off, need transferred, need new service or those out of bulk fuel. Regular Monday only walk-in service will resume Tuesday, November 12, 2019 (Due to office being closed on Monday 11/11/2019 for Veteran’s Day).
