City Of Akron Outdoor Pools And Splash Pads Now Open To The Public With Health And Safety Restrictio

Akron, Ohio, July 6, 2020 – As of July 1, the City of Akron’s aquatic amenities are now open for the summer season. The pools are located at Reservoir Park in Goodyear Heights and Perkins Park in West Akron, and the splash pads are at Joy Park in East Akron and Patterson Park in North Hill.

The brand new splash at Patterson Park was completed this spring by Terreri and Sons, Inc. Site preparation for the splash pad was generously donated by Kenmore Construction Company. A plaque will be dedicated at the site of the Joy Park splash pad in honor of Eyonni Rogers, who tragically died at just 15 months from Pompe disease, a rare hereditary disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness and is often fatal in infants. This lasting recognition is intended to honor Eyonni’s battle and promote the importance of genetic testing.

In order to access City of Akron pools this summer, all users must sign up for a free membership. You can register for that membership at akron.recdesk.com or in person at either of the pools. All minors under the age of 18, must have a parent or guardian register them for a membership. The City has implemented other safety restrictions at the pools and splash pads to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. A maximum capacity has been determined for each facility (40 people per pool), masks are being worn by employees, and patrons are asked to wear masks when they are not in the water. The splash pads will be staffed all season to monitor attendance and clean as necessary. As a reminder, for the City pools, all children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult; and for the splash pads, all children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

“We want our community to be able to participate in their favorite summertime activities in a way that is safe for everyone involved,” said Mayor Dan Horrigan. “It is vital that the guidelines are followed so that residents can enjoy these recreational opportunities while still mitigating the impact of COVID-19.”

The pools and splash pads are open Monday – Friday, 1 – 7 pm and Saturday, 1 – 5 pm, weather permitting. The 2020 season for City pools will run until Saturday, August 22 and for splash pads until Sunday, September 13. The City will continue to implement the most up-to-date guidance from public health officials and make any necessary changes to operations for the safety of residents and employees. Current safety guidelines for both employees and patrons of the City of Akron aquatics can be found here. As a reminder, the Balch Street Fitness Center will remain closed to the public until further notice.
