The City of Akron and Akron Mayor Shammas Malik are now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC), a yearlong leadership program designed to connect Akron high school students with local government, community organizations, civic engagement, and service opportunities. Applications are open now, and will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026. Applications can be found at AkronOhio.gov/MYLC.

“Akron’s young people deserve opportunities to have their voices heard and to better understand how decisions are made in their community,” said Mayor Malik. “Through MYLC, students will build leadership skills, meet people working across city government and the community, and have the opportunity to help shape Akron’s future.”

MYLC brings together student representatives from Akron Public Schools high schools as well as Archbishop Hoban High School, Walsh Jesuit High School, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. The program is open to eligible high school students entering grades 10 through 12 who reside in Akron and have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Selected students will participate in monthly leadership experiences from October through May. Programming will introduce students to local government, public safety, community engagement, parks and recreation, leadership development, and other aspects of civic life.

MYLC members are expected to attend monthly meetings, participate actively in program activities, complete required community service, contribute to the Keystone Project, and participate in the end-of-year presentation and recognition activities.

How to Apply

Students should complete the 2026–2027 MYLC Student Application with support from a parent or guardian.

Application Deadline:
