Mayor Malik Issues Statement After TWU Local 1 Votes to Authorize Strike

This evening, Transport Workers Union Local 1 voted to authorize a strike. The union represents Metro RTA’s bus operators, vehicle service workers and clerical workers. Mayor Malik has issued the following statement:

“Since the issuance of the fact-finder’s report, with Metro voting to approve, and the union’s subsequent no vote, I have continued to strongly encourage both Metro RTA and TWU Local 1 to return to the negotiating table immediately and continue in good faith to reach a compromise. The goal must be a responsible agreement that supports union workers, protects riders, and preserves the long-term sustainability of our regional transit system.

With a strike now approved by TWU Local 1, I urge the union to rejoin Metro RTA at the table and reach a fair conclusion to this negotiation.

Metro RTA workers keep Akron moving every day. They help residents get to work, school, medical appointments, grocery stores, and essential services. They deserve a fair contract that recognizes the value and dignity of that work.

At the same time, Metro must remain financially stable so it can continue providing reliable transit service for the people who depend on it most. A strike would be devastating for Akron, and families across our community would suffer. Both sides must make every effort to compromise and finalize a contract to avoid a strike as soon as possible.”
