Akron, Ohio, March 1, 2026  — Last night, Akron Police Department responded to assist a neighboring agency in the 1700 block of East Market St. after receiving information that a semi-truck fled from officers in another jurisdiction. Two Akron officers fired on the suspect during the incident. Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik has released the following statement:

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of the law enforcement officers who responded to last night's incident involving a semi-truck, including our Akron Police Department officers, the Summit County Sheriff's Office, and Springfield police. My thoughts are with one of our Akron officers who sustained a minor injury at the scene, and with the Springfield officer who was injured in the initial encounter. I am grateful that no officers or members of the public were more seriously harmed.

This incident reflects the very challenging nature of police work and the reality that officers must be prepared to respond to significant dangers. I'm thankful for the dedication of our Akron Police Department officers, who serve our city each and every day.”
