Pressure Mounts! Obama and Pelosi Signal Doubts Over Biden’s 2024 Bid as Party Panic Grows

President Joe Biden is facing increasing pressure from top Democratic figures to abandon his bid for re-election amid fears within the party that his campaign may falter against Donald Trump, enhancing Republican prospects in both the presidential and congressional races. Former President Barack Obama has expressed privately that Biden’s chances of securing a victory have significantly diminished and suggested he reconsider his candidacy, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Additionally, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly shared with Biden her concerns about his electoral viability, although a spokesperson for Pelosi claims the reports mischaracterized her comments. While Obama’s office declined to comment officially, a person familiar with his stance mentioned that Obama sees himself as a “sounding board and counselor,” while still believing Biden has been an “outstanding president.”

Despite public assurances from Biden’s campaign that he remains the party’s nominee, internal discontent appears to be growing. More than 20 Democratic lawmakers have publicly urged Biden to step down. Senior House Democrat Adam Schiff has called for Biden to “pass the torch,” citing doubts about his ability to win against Trump in the upcoming election, Financial Times reports.

The crisis within the party has been exacerbated by Biden’s lackluster performance during a recent debate with Trump. This has led some Democratic insiders to question his continued candidacy. “I don’t see how he survives this,” a congressional lawmaker commented, highlighting the extent of the party’s anxiety.

With Biden currently isolating due to a COVID-19 diagnosis at his home in Delaware, his campaign spokesperson Quentin Fulks maintains that the president will remain the Democratic nominee. However, polls indicate otherwise—Biden trails Trump in nearly all national and swing state surveys, including those released by Emerson College and the Associated Press.

The sentiment among influential Democratic donors and operatives is becoming increasingly skeptical. A significant number anticipate Biden’s exit, with mounting speculation that he might bow out due to his illness. High-profile donors have conveyed that their financial support is contingent upon a swift change in the nominee.

Leading Democrats such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have reportedly informed Biden about the potential electoral repercussions of his continued candidacy. The message conveyed to both Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House is clear: financial backing will wane unless a new candidate steps in.

The debate debacle and the confusing exchanges during a recent NATO summit press conference have only intensified the calls for Biden to step aside. Polls among Democratic insiders now show Biden losing ground to possible successors like Vice President Kamala Harris and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, further stoking the fire of internal dissent. As the Democratic Party navigates this critical juncture, the pressure on Biden to consider his role in the 2024 race intensifies, with many hoping for a candid assessment of his chances to prevent a Republican resurgence led by Donald Trump.
