‘Sinners’ Sweeps with 13 Wins at NAACP Image Awards – Delroy Lindo Thanks Supporters After BAFTA Incident

Actor Delroy Lindo addressed the audience at the 57th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday (Feb. 28) with heartfelt thanks for the “support and love” following last weekend’s controversial incident at the BAFTA Film Awards.

Lindo, taking the stage with “Sinners” writer-director Ryan Coogler, received a standing ovation before speaking about the Feb. 23 BAFTA ceremony. During that event, while Lindo and Michael B. Jordan were presenting an award on stage, a guest with Tourette’s syndrome involuntarily shouted a racial slur. The moment aired unedited on the BBC broadcast despite requests to remove it, sparking widespread backlash.

“Before we present this award, I just want to officially say that we appreciate all the support and love in the aftermath of what happened last weekend,” Lindo told the NAACP audience. “It means a lot to us. It’s a classic case of something that could have been very negative becoming very positive.”

He reflected on the honor of being at the NAACP event amid the outpouring of solidarity. Earlier in the ceremony, host Regina Hall called for a moment to recognize “the two kings in the audience” — Jordan and Lindo — leading to another wave of applause.

‘Sinners’ dominates the night

“Sinners,” the horror-thriller, which Coogler directed, swept the awards, winning 13 trophies including several non-televised honors presented earlier in the week. The film starred Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, with Lindo in a supporting part.

Key wins during the broadcast included:

Outstanding Motion Picture

Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture — Michael B. Jordan

Entertainer of the Year — Michael B. Jordan

Additional wins from earlier presentations included Supporting Actor for Lindo, Breakthrough Performance for Miles Caton, and Ensemble Cast, among others.

The film led with 18 nominations overall, celebrating Black excellence in storytelling, performance and cultural impact. Jordan dedicated his acting win to the late Chadwick Boseman in his speech, and Coogler spoke on the enduring power of Black resilience.
