Water Service Assistance Program for Eligible Residents Extended

AKRON, Ohio – Community Action Akron Summit announces the extension of the emergency program that assists low-income families (renters and home owners) in Akron and Summit County struggling to pay overdue water bills and maintain service through March 31, 2024.

The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) assists those facing financial hardship to ensure continued access to clean and safe water. The program aims to help prevent disconnections and safeguard uninterrupted access to this essential resource.

Possible assistance is based on federal funding levels, number of household residents, and total household income. If approved for assistance, direct payments are made to a resident’s utility provider.

Examples of crisis situations eligible for LIHWAP assistance are:

  • Past-due water and sewer bills;

  • Disconnection of water and sewer service;

  • Danger of service being terminated; or

  • Need to establish a new service or pay to transfer an existing service.

During this program extension, income eligible households can receive assistance with current water and sewer bills. Households are eligible for assistance up to $750 on water and $750 on sewer.

The process of applying for assistance is straightforward. To schedule an appointment, residents can visit app.capappointments.com or call 330-436-0261.
