Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated-Zeta Theta Omega Chapter Celebrating 65 Years of  Service t

Akron, OH- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Theta Omega Chapter (ZTO), in collaboration with The Pearl Foundation, the chapter's 501c (3) philanthropy arm, held an exciting milestone anniversary. On April 6, 2019, the ladies of ZTO celebrated this momentous occasion at Our Lady of the Cedars, Cleveland-Massillon Road, Copley, OH. The celebration hosted by Belinda J. Hinton, Esq and Kimberly Huff, highlighted the lifelong committed of ZTO in the Akron community. Dana K. LaGarde, President brought greetings and Dr. Audrey Martin and Kimberly Huff served as the emcees for the evening. The guests listened as the Dan Wilson Jazz Band played soothing tunes during the dinner.

The international program theme Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service was exhibited with the honoring of scholarships and community awards. ZTO and the Pearl Foundation awarded five scholarships to recipients from the University of Akron, Kent State University and two local high schools. ZTO acknowledged the great partnerships in the Akron community by awarding community awards to The Reporter Newspaper, Pastor Lynette Jenkins, and Woodrow Nash, for their accomplishments and committed partnerships.

Zeta Theta Omega history spans 65 years in the Akron community. The Beta Beta chapter, which was founded in Akron in 1932. The chapter consisted of both graduate and undergraduate women. The founding members were Susan Lyles, Willa Player, Geraldine Dyson Powells, Mary Hogan Smith, Juella Thompson, and Virginia Threatt. The first initiate was Edith Delaney Mitchell in 1933. Beta Beta was dissolved and a new, separate graduate chapter, Zeta Theta Omega was chartered on April 3, 1954, at the home of Leona Farris. Of the 29 charter members, three members; Thelma Allen, Doris Pryear, and Leona Farris three are active in the ZTO chapter.
